It does, and measurably. Salt air corrodes condenser and evaporator coils, attacks electrical terminals, and leaves contacts that no longer make a clean connection. Appliances a block from the sand generally need their coils cleaned and inspected more often than the same unit five miles inland.

Surface pitting on stainless is cosmetic corrosion and is not something a repair puts right, though we can tell you whether it has reached anything that matters functionally. What we do care about is corrosion on coils and electrical connections, because that is what actually stops the appliance working.
