Ice on the evaporator almost always means the defrost cycle is not doing its job: a failed defrost heater, a timer or control that is not initiating, or a termination sensor ending the cycle too early. Clearing the ice makes the box work for a day or two, which is exactly why the defrost circuit needs diagnosing rather than the ice simply removed.
